How does your vision change over time following LASIK?

While LASIK is a permanent procedure, you may experience some changes in your vision after you have undergone LASIK treatment. For most patients, changes in the eye take several years before they become noticeable, and are usually not severe enough to require retreatment.

As we age, most individuals become more farsighted, and resort to holding documents and items with fine print at arm’s length until we choose to invest in reading glasses. This is not a symptom caused by LASIK, but rather the natural progression of age. LASIK may not protect you from the natural aging of your eyes.

If you frequently read in low light or work for long periods of time at a computer, you are more likely to experience eye changes after LASIK. Like eye aging, the effects of prolonged computer use and reading in low light may not become noticeable instantaneously, but may take several years to develop.

You can protect your eyes from these kinds of changes by:

  • Reading in well-lit areas
  • Taking frequent breaks from the screen by focusing on something far away for several minutes each hour
  • Closing your eyes periodically to let them rest
  • Using proper ergonomic positioning of your computer monitor.
