Eye Injuries after LASIK
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about 2,000 eye injuries occur daily in US workplaces. The chances that you may suffer an eye injury after LASIK are equal to the changes that you will suffer one before corrective eye surgery.
Immediately after LASIK your eye is more susceptible to an injury than before the surgery or after the flap has healed.
A flap is created on the surface of your eye to allow the laser access to reshape your cornea during the LASIK procedure. Because your eye has a unique makeup which allows the flap to re-seal itself to the rest of your eye relatively quickly without sutures, it is common to simply allow your eye to heal without any assistance.
But the fact that your eye does not require sutures after LASIK the way other types of surgery do does not mean that your eye heals immediately. There is a typical period of 2 to 4 weeks during which the eye flap is still healing and may be relatively easily detached, particularly if you are struck in the eye.
If you experience trauma to your eye during the postoperative healing time, you should make an appointment to see Dr. Carter immediately. While you may not immediately noticeable any eye injury, taking the precaution of having Dr. Carter examine your eye can prevent costly and painful complications which may arise later.
