LASIK and Eye Sensitivity

Many patients ask about negative side effects of LASIK, and one common side effect is that of light sensitivity. For most patients light sensitivity diminishes after a few days or, at the most, weeks. Occasionally a patients becomes more sensitive to light after a few days or weeks, and if you experience this type of side effect, you should return for a follow up exam.

Sensitivity after LASIK is uncommon in a debilitating ratio. While light sensitivity is perhaps the most noticeable type of sensitivity after LASIK, others are common and often directly related to no longer wearing contacts.

Wind sensitivity
- If you wear contacts, you may experience sensitivity to wind or dust after your LASIK procedure. This often occurs because your eyes are used to being constantly protected by your contacts, and are not used to the experience of feeling wind against the surface of the cornea.

Dry eyes - Patients who used to experience dry eyes with contacts may experience it more noticeably after LASIK, particularly if you are used to using eye drops to keep your contacts moist. You may still use eye drops, but should use drops designed for eyes without contact lenses.

Less Sensitivity

Some patients find that their eyes are less sensitive after LASIK, which is also not uncommon. Because you no longer place contacts in and remove contacts from your eyes on a regular basis, the surfaces of your eyes are less likely to come into contact with dust and fluids which may be transferred from your hands.

If you have had LASIK and experience eye sensitivity, you should schedule a follow up appointment with Dr. Carter to ensure that it is not an indication of an injury or negative side effect. Please contact Carter Eye Center today if you are in the Dallas area of Texas and have questions about eye sensitivity after LASIK.
